Also known as an epicyclic gear system, this is a mechanical transmission system consisting of a central sun gear together with multiple planet gears revolving around it and an outer ring gear. Usually compact in size, they provide a high torque output, precise motion control, and an efficient power distribution.<\/p>\n

A planetary gearbox works through a gear arrangement that transfers power and increases torque. The sun gear receives input power from the motor and drives the nearby planet gears.<\/p>\n

Spur or Helical Gear<\/h3>\n

Planetary gearboxes can use spur or helical gears. While spur gears have straight teeth with a zero helix angle, helical gears have angled teeth with up to a 10 to 30 degrees helix angle. As such, a planetary helical gearbox offers high load capacity and quiet smooth operation.<\/p>\n

Multi-Stage<\/h3>\n

In-Line<\/h3>\n

A planetary inline gearbox has its input and output shaft in a straight line, with its single sun gear and several planet gears contained in a ring gear. This allows for a more compact design while improving efficiency.<\/p>\n

Offset<\/h3>\n

Also called the parallel shaft planetary gears, this type is commonly used in agricultural machinery and industrial equipment. They also feature the input and output shaft located in a parallel position.<\/p>\n

In a planetary right angle gearbox, the input and output shaft are placed at a right angle with each other. As such, the design includes bevel gears together with planetary gear stages.<\/p>\n

Harmonic Drive<\/h3>\n

This is also referred to as strain wave gearboxes and wave generator gearboxes, and the design follows the principle of planetary gear systems and harmonic drives. And as such it offers high reduction ratios and precision, zero backlash and excellent positional accuracy which makes it valuable for medical robots and robotic arms.<\/p>\n

Ravigneaux<\/a> usually have a complex structure with two ring gears, two sun gears and two planet gears within one carrier. Several modern automatic vehicle transmissions use this.<\/p>\n
